Typography plays a huge role in terms of design. The art of typography is almost always there in every graphic design materials. With the development of an increasingly distant, typography experience a variety of shifts and comes with a set of academic terms that are quite complex. So often confusing, not only among the laity, but even a graphic designer. One form of misunderstanding that most often comes up is related to the difference between typeface and font.

The Difference Between a Font and a Typeface

Typeface is often referred to as fonts or vice versa, font is often refered as the typeface. These differences often lead to wrong understanding in the world of typography and graphic design in general. Indeed, these two terms have different meaning.

Typeface

Typeface is the character design of a set of letters. Typeface is a "typographical arrangement" that make up the characteristics of a collection of letters that distinguishes it from other types of letters.

Font

Fonts are a complete collection of letters, numbers, symbols, or characters that have a certain size and character.

The difference between a font and a typeface


Simply put, Typeface can be called as an entity, namely the typographical arrangement, characteristics, uniqueness, and the difference formed in the design of font characters. While the font may be called quantity, namely the weight, mass, and the number of series characters.

Not all 'typeface' can be referred to as the font, for example 'typeface' designed only some letters for the purpose of a logo. Conversely, not all fonts can also be called a typeface. Dingbat font type for example, because it isn't designed from the letters.
